Shades of Memory
Relanar, city of the elves, was once hidden deep within the Greenwood. But, as Anurians fled their desolated cities, some settled at the edge of the forest. As they expanded, cutting down trees to allow for farmland and build homes, the wood lost some of its northern ground. In time, Relanar was revealed to the world.
Relanar is, in truth, two cities. Many arboreal elves dwell above the human city, high in the boughs of their ancient song-trees. They live out their days in study, light, and song, high above the petty cares of the world. Though most of them are old enough to have witnessed the fall, the elves remained neutral as the human kingdom was laid to ruin. This was not out of any special hatred for men, simply a lack of interest—though the more recent destruction of the forest has not won men any elven friends.
The human city is much more traditional, though most northerners would still find it quite esoteric. Despite the abundance of wood, most of the human residents made their homes from earth and stone to attempt to placate the elven mages living above them. Many even include the arching roots of the song-trees in their construction. The city’s three districts—glades, as the residents call them—are defined by the three largest trees in the city and are surprisingly parallel in both upper and lower Relanar.
